BACKGROUND
TurnUp Activism was founded in 2020 as a way to connect young people to opportunities where they can become more civically engaged and involved in their communities. This organization “aim[s] to strengthen democracy by increasing high-impact youth civic action and closing the gap between young people who want to take civic action and those who do so.”

PROBLEM
This organization is focused on utilizing its mobile app, along with other digital/social platforms to connect young people from across the nation to find opportunities to become advocates in their own communities. How can TurnUp further amplify its digital presence to reach more young people, using digital and visual communication to increase participation in the organization?

PROCESS
I was able to elevate aspects of TurnUp’s digital presence by establishing a new design direction within the existing brand guidelines for the digital, social, and promotional materials that I created for this organization. I started by researching various design trends and color schemes that were gaining traction on different social media platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter/X, Threads, etc. I was able to use TurnUp’s existing brand guidelines, research best practices, and create a plan to incorporate a new creative direction within these brand guidelines as well. I was able to create digital design materials that were visually appealing in a new, creative way, while also not alienating TurnUp’s existing brand guidelines as well.

As a result, I was able to earn an Impact Award in 2024 due to my creative and visual design work for this organization. Effective visual communication can make a large difference in the overall engagement that an organization is able to garner from its target base. Utilizing effective design strategies such as visual hierarchy, focal points, emphasis, balance, and visual unity can all help to make the promotion of digital/social content more engaging and compelling to the viewer.
